RBI Holds Repo Rate Steady at 5.5% Amid Gold Rally, Boosting Startups

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has maintained its repo rate at 5.5%, a move that could provide some respite to India's startup ecosystem amidst global uncertainties and a rally in precious metals. This decision comes as gold and silver prices reach historic highs, potentially affecting venture capital flows into emerging markets like India.

The RBI's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) kept the repo rate unchanged, citing subdued inflation and raising the GDP forecast for fiscal year 2026 to 6.8%. This stable rate is expected to support startups by maintaining easier financing conditions. However, the recent surge in precious metals prices may pose challenges. Gold and silver prices in Delhi have skyrocketed, with gold reaching ₹1,19,500 per 10 grams and silver ₹1.5 lakh per kilogram. Globally, spot gold touched USD 3,824.61 per ounce, and silver reached USD 47.18 per ounce.

Analysts attribute this surge to global uncertainties, a weakening dollar, and renewed demand for safe-haven assets. While this could open new opportunities for fintech startups offering digital gold products and hedging solutions, startups are concerned about how the RBI will respond to these inflationary signals. A tighter monetary stance could make debt financing more expensive and slow down fundraising efforts.

As the RBI's MPC begins its three-day meeting, India's financial markets are on edge. The RBI's decision on repo rates will be crucial for startups navigating the last quarter of 2025. While the current stable rate provides some support, the precious metals rally may introduce new challenges and opportunities for the startup ecosystem.
