The Hamburg-Berlin railway line is currently undergoing a comprehensive modernization, with Deutsche Bahn leading the renovation project. This overhaul, scheduled to be completed between 2025 and 2026, includes the replacement of old tracks and the installation of new switches, totalling 165 kilometres and 249 new switches respectively.

Work on the signal boxes along the route has already begun, as part of the renovation project. These signal boxes are crucial components in the safe and efficient operation of the railway. The company involved in the renovation has already replaced 58 kilometres of track and installed 43 new switches since early August.

However, progress on the planned work on signals, overhead lines, and platforms has been slow so far. To accommodate these works, long-distance traffic is being rerouted via Uelzen and Stendal, adding approximately 45 minutes to the journey.

Despite this, about a third of the planned track work has been completed on the Hamburg-Berlin route. Notably, a large railway crane was deployed north of Wittenberge to remove the fixed track bed at this location. The track bed was cut into six-meter-long slabs and loaded onto the railway crane for removal.

To cater to the disrupted regional traffic, a replacement bus service with 170 buses has been set up. The railway line has been completely closed since early August and will remain closed until the end of April.

In addition to the track work, the embankment is to be rebuilt with ballast and sleepers at the location north of Wittenberge. This renovation project aims to improve the safety, efficiency, and reliability of the Hamburg-Berlin railway line, ensuring a smoother journey for passengers in the future.

As the renovation progresses, passengers are advised to check the latest travel information before planning their journeys. Deutsche Bahn remains committed to completing this modernization project on schedule, providing a much-needed upgrade to this vital transportation route.
