Railway Arson Strikes Again in Germany, Marking Second Attack in Two Days

In a series of disturbing incidents, a left-wing extremist group, suspected to be the "Angry Birds Commando," has claimed responsibility for two arson attacks on a key railway line between Düsseldorf and Duisburg, Germany. The disruptions caused by these attacks are expected to continue until at least Saturday morning.

On Thursday, a fire in a cable duct crucial for railway operations led to widespread disruptions on the Duesseldorf-Duisburg route, one of Germany's busiest railway lines. The second attack occurred hours later, 1.8 kilometers (1.1 miles) north of the first near the town of Angermund. The incendiary device used in both attacks was of the same type, leading authorities to believe that both incidents were carried out by the same perpetrators.

The "Angry Birds Commando" has been known to authorities as a left-wing extremist group, and they have carried out several acts of sabotage in the Dusseldorf area in recent years. In a statement, the group claimed responsibility for Thursday's arson attack on the railway line. On Friday, they also claimed responsibility for the second attack.

The disruptions have affected numerous train services, including those serving Duesseldorf International Airport, Germany's fourth-busiest airport. Long queues were reported at Duesseldorf and Duisburg central stations on Friday morning as commuters tried to make alternative travel arrangements.

German rail operator Deutsche Bahn identified the incidents as acts of vandalism. The interior minister of North Rhine-Westphalia noted that such extremist groups have carried out numerous sabotage acts in the Düsseldorf region in recent years. The police are treating the incidents as sabotage, and a leftist organization is being investigated for potential involvement.

However, no individual or group has yet claimed direct responsibility for Friday's incident. The "Angry Birds Commando" statement posted on Thursday referred to "several attacks" in the Duesseldorf region. Train diversions and delays are expected due to the disruptions.

The city of Duesseldorf experienced a second arson attack on a key railway line in two days. The disruption is likely to continue until Saturday morning at least, causing significant inconvenience for commuters and travellers. The authorities are working diligently to identify and apprehend the perpetrators and restore normal operations as soon as possible.
