Pursue the BAIC U5 Plus, the taxi model that is currently operating in the field.
The BAIC U5 Plus, a sedan that has found favour among taxi drivers, offers a blend of practicality and convenience, but falls short in the realm of speed and performance.
Manufactured by BeiJing Auto (BAIC), the U5 Plus boasts a 1.5-liter 105-horsepower engine paired with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). However, its performance leaves much to be desired, making it a slow car on the road. This issue, coupled with some minor ergonomic and handling flaws, presents a significant drawback for potential buyers.
Inside the cabin, the U5 Plus offers a balance between comfort and functionality. The interior materials are not luxurious but neither are they overly basic. The front seat is heated, and the driver's seat comes with electric adjustments, while the passenger seat has manual adjustments. The seats also feature pronounced side support, providing a snug fit for drivers.
However, the U5 Plus falls short in terms of sound insulation. On the highway, noticeable wind and tire noise can be heard, detracting from the overall driving experience. The ride quality is further compromised by significant body roll in corners and a light, uncommunicative steering.
The U5 Plus comes equipped with some useful features, such as Carbitlink support and the ability to set how many times the turn signal blinks. Unfortunately, some features missing from the interface detract from the overall user experience.
One design flaw that stands out is the rattling rear doors and the cheap-sounding clunk when opened and closed. Another issue is the overly sensitive lane-keeping assist, which beeps as soon as you get close to the line. The brakes, too, are soft and require a lot of pedal travel, adding to the U5 Plus's list of drawbacks.
The top-spec BAIC U5 Plus retails for Br62,500, and it rides on 17-inch alloy wheels. In the city, the U5 Plus boasts a fuel consumption of 9 liters per 100 km. Additionally, the U5 Plus comes with a heated package, including heated rearview mirrors, washer nozzles, and windshield.
Despite its shortcomings, the BAIC U5 Plus remains a practical choice for those seeking a reliable sedan at an affordable price. However, potential buyers should be aware of its speed and performance issues before making a decision.
