Public service tariff adjustment: ver.di NRW advocates for a flexible proposal
News Article: Verdi's Wage Negotiations in North Rhine-Westphalia: Key Demands and Ongoing Conflict
In North Rhine-Westphalia, the ongoing wage negotiations between ver.di, a powerful trade union, and both the federal government and municipalities, have reached a critical stage. The union is advocating for substantial wage increases, additional allowances, and greater flexibility in working hours for approximately 640,000 public sector employees.
At the heart of ver.di's demands is a call for a total wage increase of 10.5% by 2025, with a minimum monthly increase of 350 euros. The union is also seeking a one-time allowance of 600 euros for all employees as part of the negotiation process. Additionally, ver.di is proposing the introduction of a "My Time Account" to provide employees with more flexibility and time sovereignty.
The sectors involved in these negotiations are wide-ranging and include municipal hospitals, savings banks, public transport, airports, utilities, municipal kindergartens, cultural institutions such as museums, libraries, theaters, and sports facilities like public swimming pools. Employees from public transport, airports, cultural institutions, and sports facilities have been particularly affected by the ongoing negotiations.
Ver.di is also pushing for higher allowances for particularly stressful activities and three additional free days to counteract high workloads. The union's demands reflect a desire for more adaptable working time models within public institutions in North Rhine-Westphalia.
So far, the negotiations have been fruitless, leading to strike actions such as the full-day warning strike at Dortmund Airport on March 10, 2025. This demonstrates ver.di's willingness to escalate the conflict if their demands are not met.
The current status of the negotiations was summarised in early 2025, capturing ver.di NRW’s key demands and the negotiation dynamics with public employers in the region. The conflict remains unresolved, with both parties yet to reach an agreement.
