Port of Brunswick Tops U.S. Auto Shipments in 2024; Savannah Invests $614M in Infrastructure
The Port of Brunswick has taken the lead as the top U.S. maritime hub for auto shipments in 2024, overtaking the Port of Baltimore with an impressive 841,000 vehicles handled. Meanwhile, the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) has approved significant infrastructure improvements and implemented efficiency measures at the Port of Savannah.
The GPA's board has given the green light to a substantial $614 million investment in infrastructure upgrades at Ocean Terminal. This move aims to enhance the port's capabilities and accommodate growing demand. In a bid to optimize operations, the GPA has introduced a new fast-track routing process for container vessels entering Savannah, reducing vessel idle time and streamlining river transit.
The Port of Savannah's August volume was the third highest in its history, with a notable 9% increase in TEUs handled year-on-year, totaling 534,037 units. This impressive performance comes on the heels of a 3.2% increase in container volumes for the fiscal year-to-date through August, reaching 1,010,725 TEUs. Despite a 14.3% decrease in auto and machinery units handled at Colonels Island Terminal, the port's overall performance remains robust.
The first half of the Ocean Terminal container yard renovation is slated for completion in 2027, with the remaining half set to follow in 2028. These improvements are expected to further bolster the port's capacity and efficiency.
The Port of Savannah's continued growth and investment in infrastructure are driving significant economic benefits for the state of Georgia. Port activity supports over 650,000 full- and part-time jobs, representing a 7% increase compared to fiscal year 2023, and contributes $77 billion to the state's gross domestic product, a 7% gain from the previous year.
