Plans to Extend a Substantial European Tube Network Involve the Incorporation of Croatia
24th April, 2025: Bold, new plans for the Tube for Europe project are about to shake up the way we zip across Europe and the UK, Ireland, and Croatia. Here's the lowdown on this game-changer.
As reported by Poslovni Dnevnik/VL/Goran Sudar, whispers of a superspeed train network, affectionately dubbed the Tube for Europe, have surfaced. And guess who's part of the action? You got it—Croatia's hopping on board!
With these bad boys in the form of a metro system, the usual long hauls to major European destinations will become a thing of the past. Imagine departing from London, Liverpool, Glasgow, or even Belfast, and reaching your dream destinations in no time!
The mastermind behind this visionary plan is think-tank 21st Europe, alongside tech design studio Bakken & Bæck, with offices in Oslo, Amsterdam, Bonn, London, and Barcelona. Collaborating with Culte Commune in Paris, the aim is to create designs that spur conversations and instill optimism for Europe's future.1
Slicking up Europe's rails
Presented primarily as a solution to enhance rail transport across the continent, details about the Tube for Europe project's location and possible presentation event are yet to be revealed.
The hype surrounding this project is well-founded, as it promises train speeds of an eye-popping 400 km/h! That'll guarantee far shorter journeys. For example, travellers from Helsinki would be able to reach Berlin in a steal of only three hours, while today this route requires an entire day.2
Similar journeys, like the traditionally overnight trip between Kiev and Berlin, would become efficient, "seamless connections."2
The ambitious plan encompasses connecting every European country, from Portugal down to Turkey and beyond to Ukraine. Each nation will have at least one dedicated station, with the network covering every corner of Europe—from Portugal to Budapest, Athens to Moscow, and even Dublin to Oslo.1

Stations with a beat
Unlike the typical, sterile train stations, these new stations will be vibrant cultural centers, located outside the city itself. They'll serve as bustling public spaces with cultural facilities, squares, and events, making them major destinations in their own right.1
The design will embrace the color blue, inspired by the EU flag, to emphasize the European spirit of this impressive project. The aim is for the blue trains to become a recognizable symbol, similar to the red double-decker buses of London or New York's yellow taxis.1
Find your zone

The trains will offer various zones adapted to passenger needs. Quiet zones for work or focus, conversation areas for socializing, family zones with kid-friendly facilities, and coffee zones to enjoy refreshments during the journey.1
Starline also has plans for a freight rail network that'll up the ante on logistics and goods transportation across Europe.1
As of now, the Tube for Europe project is still just a concept. However, the company hopes to fund it from the EU budget and national governments.3
Word on the street is that every European country, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, will have at least one station on the network.3

Five corridors for these trains are planned, marked with the letters A, B, C, D, and E. Croatia will be part of Corridor B, running from Lisbon, Portugal, to Kiev, Ukraine, with the station located in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.3
But does it come with a price tag?
While precise data on the project's total cost isn't available yet, given it's still in the concept stage, it's estimated that similar infrastructure projects have hefty budgets. For instance, the construction of the 57.5-kilometer Mont d'Ambin/Mont Cenis base tunnel between France and Italy is estimated at around 8 billion euros. Given the scale and complexity of this massive European metro project, the total costs will likely be significantly higher.4
So buckle up, Europeans! The Tube for Europe project is set to redefine intercontinental travel as we know it, with Croatia caught in the thrill of it all!
