Paramount-Skydance merger given green light by US authorities
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has given the green light to the sale of Hollywood conglomerate Paramount to Skydance Media, headed by billionaire film producer David Ellison. The deal, valued at $8 billion, includes major assets such as the CBS broadcast network, Paramount Pictures, and Nickelodeon.
The regulatory approval process was a significant hurdle, but the FCC granted a series of applications transferring FCC licenses necessary for the acquisition. The vote was 2-1 in favor, with Chairman Brendan Carr praising Skydance's commitment to revitalize CBS and ensure programming includes a diversity of viewpoints across political and ideological lines. Skydance also committed to hiring an independent adviser to evaluate complaints of bias.
The political implications are notable, with Chairman Carr criticizing "invidious forms" of diversity, equity, and inclusion measures in legacy media and framing the merger as a step toward change in national news reporting. In contrast, Commissioner Anna Gomez dissented, warning that the merger would "further erode press freedom" and criticized the FCC for what she called "cowardly capitulation" to the current administration. She suggested the American public would suffer negative consequences from the merger.
The transaction is expected to close on August 7, 2025, pending final conditions. This acquisition marks a significant shift in U.S. media ownership, with both regulatory scrutiny and political debate centered on the future direction of major broadcast news and entertainment content.
The sale of Paramount to Skydance was initially mired in politics due to a lawsuit by former U.S. President Donald Trump against CBS over alleged election meddling. However, a year after the lawsuit, the deal has finally been approved, setting the stage for a new era in U.S. media.
