Package delivery disruption amidst holiday shopping: strikes by parcel services in Bavaria
In the lead-up to the third round of wage negotiations on December 17, workers in the logistics and parcel delivery sector in Bavaria are participating in warning strikes. These strikes, which are scheduled to continue until December 23 if no new offer is made by employers, do not involve Deutsche Post.
Vereinte Dienstleistungsgewerkschaft (Verdi), a major German trade union, is behind these strikes. Historically, Verdi has advocated for better wages, improved working conditions, and job security in the sector. However, the current status and key demands of the union in relation to the strike in Bavaria are unclear, as recent data and news on the issue are scarce.
The strikes are expected to cause delivery delays and failures throughout Bavaria, affecting companies such as FedEx, DPD, UPS, and Hermes. Negotiations are currently underway for employees of Hermes, Trans-o-flex, DPD, UPS, Schenker Deutschland, FedEx, Kuehne and Nagel, Dachser, and other companies.
The offer presented by the employers' association LBS has been deemed "absolutely unacceptable" by Verdi negotiator David Merck. The union is demanding an additional 368 euros in wages and salaries for employees in the industry in Bavaria over a 12-month period.
Verdi expects consequences for the Christmas business due to the strikes. The current hourly wage for freight forwarding clerks after a three-year apprenticeship is 15.17 euros per hour.
These strikes are part of a larger negotiation process, taking place amidst the busy holiday season. It is advised to keep an eye on reliable news sources for updates on this developing situation.
The strikes in Bavaria, spearheaded by Verdi, are causing disruptions in public-transit and transportation, affecting businesses like FedEx, DPD, and UPS. Verdi finds the employers' offer unacceptable and demands a 368 euro wage increase for workers in the logistics and parcel delivery industry over a year. As Christmas approaches, Verdi anticipates these strikes to impact the finance sector, given the potential consequences for the holiday business.
