Osnabrück City and County collaborate on boosting their regional economy

The city of Osnabrück, located in Lower Saxony, Germany, showcased its investment opportunities at Europe's largest B2B real estate fair, EXPO REAL. Osnabrück's dynamic economic landscape, focusing on industrial innovation, logistics infrastructure, and sustainable development, drew great interest from over 40,000 participants and 1,778 exhibitors.

The Osnabrück region, home to the Niedersachsenpark - the largest intermunicipal industrial park in Lower Saxony - and the upcoming Smart Business Park Limberg and Lok Quarter, is attracting attention for its advanced recycling technologies, logistics real estate, and infrastructure development.

The Smart Business Park Limberg, a new digital location for innovative companies, was presented at the fair. Although specific projects at this park are not yet detailed, it is known to host activities aligned with broader growth themes in Osnabrück. The Lok Quarter, a flagship urban development and business district, serves as a hub for commercial innovation and mixed-use projects, although current sources do not specify ongoing projects here.

One of the key projects highlighted at the fair was the expansion of Grannex's advanced mechanical recycling facility in Osnabrück. This €20 million investment has scaled up a proprietary mechanical recycling process capable of handling complex and contaminated plastics waste streams, including engineering plastics like ABS. With a total processing capacity of approximately 20,000 tons per year, this facility represents a significant investment in sustainable industrial processes headquartered in Osnabrück.

Garbe Industrial Real Estate is also actively developing logistics centers in Osnabrück, enhancing the region’s positioning as a logistics hub accommodating e-commerce, automotive, and industrial supply chains. Hafen Wittlager Land, another significant area, is part of one of the largest infrastructure projects of recent years.

The discussions at the fair centered around commercial areas and investment opportunities, particularly around the Smart Business Park Limberg and the Lok Quarter. Susanne Menke, CEO of oleg (Osnabrück Land Development Company), highlighted successful cooperation with project developers in residential construction and quarter development. Patrick Ulbert (WIGOS) discussed challenges in logistics infrastructure regarding climate goals.

The region encourages companies to actively shape the investment opportunities in Osnabrück. The current strategic investment push in Germany, featuring a €500 billion infrastructure and defense fund, suggests strong governmental and private co-investment momentum that could benefit Osnabrück-based projects, especially those involving infrastructure, transport, and technology sectors.

The City and District of Osnabrück, represented by District Administrator Anna Kebschull and Mayor Katharina Pötter, were among the prominent guests at the fair. WIGOS (Economic Development Agency of the Osnabrück Region) and WFO (Economic Development Osnabrück) showcased the advantages and future projects of the region. CEOs Peter Vahrenkamp (WIGOS) and Ingmar Bojes (WFO) expressed satisfaction with the fair's success and the great interest in the developments in Osnabrück.

In summary, Osnabrück's investment appeal around the Smart Business Park Limberg and Lok Quarter centers on industrial innovation including recycling technology, logistics infrastructure development, and the potential to leverage Germany’s substantial public-private investment incentives in infrastructure and sustainability. The region's existing projects like Grannex’s recycling expansion and Garbe’s logistics centers exemplify ongoing growth, reflecting Osnabrück’s strategic role in advanced manufacturing and logistics within Lower Saxony. Various industries are invited to utilize the diverse investment opportunities in the Osnabrück region.
