Old-timer terminates discussions at his usual spot in the regular gathering
In a quaint pub in Reichenbach, a unique friendship was formed over a heated discussion about American vehicles. This chance encounter led to Dieter Weiß acquiring a one-of-a-kind vehicle - the Soviet ZIL 131 truck.
Manufactured by the ZIL (Zavod Imeni Lieva Gagarina) vehicle manufacturer from 1967 onwards, the ZIL 131 truck is a sturdy beast, known for its impressive capabilities. Originally developed in the 1950s, it served as a base vehicle for multiple rocket launchers in the Warsaw Pact, including the NVA in East Germany.
The ZIL 131 truck boasts a six-liter BigBlock V8 gasoline engine, making it a powerhouse on the road. According to its specifications, its fuel consumption is 50 liters per 100 kilometers. However, during a trip with the truck, Weiß consumed approximately 150 liters of gasoline, a testament to its mighty engine.
The truck's journey to Weiß's possession was not without its twists and turns. A Russian-German tourist guest played a crucial role in helping Weiß obtain a gasoline pump for the truck. The person who facilitated this was none other than Pavel. But the details of how the gasoline pump was obtained remain a mystery to Weiß.
The ZIL 131 truck is no longer in its original condition. Over time, it deteriorated and was dismantled and sold in Nordholz after the NVA was disbanded. Some technical parts were removed because they were not yet known in the West. Despite these modifications, it continues to stand as a symbol of a bygone era, having been a part of the "Heilix Blechle Stories" series and an oldtimer, regardless of the number of wheels.
Today, the Russian ZIL 131 truck has been standing in front of Dieter Weiß's house for several years. Its presence is a testament to an unusual friendship and a unique chapter in automotive history. If you have your own special vehicles with cult status and oldtimer status, we encourage you to share them with us. Send an email to the provided email address with your contact details and the subject "Heilix Blechle".
Despite its deteriorated state, the ZIL 131 truck's capabilities are still evident. It can easily pull a tree out by the roots and handle a 45-degree incline, proving that it is more than just a relic of the past. It is a symbol of strength, resilience, and the spirit of adventure, a testament to the enduring allure of the open road.
