Offshore Wind Farm Neart na Gaoithe, with a capacity of 450 MW, Now in Full Functionality in Scotland as per Our Site
Neart na Gaoithe Wind Farm Officially Goes Live in Scotland
The Neart na Gaoithe (NnG) wind farm, located 15.5 kilometers off the coast of Fife, Scotland, has become fully operational. The wind farm, co-owned by EDF power solutions UK and Ireland, and ESB, started delivering power in October 2024 and completed its final commissioning and installation of all 54 turbines by July 24-26, 2025 [1][2][3][4].
The operations and maintenance (O&M) base for the NnG wind farm was opened in January 2023 in Eyemouth. The base includes a 1,040-square-metre, three-story operations and maintenance building, and a 538-square-metre storage warehouse [5][6]. The O&M base will provide around 50 high-quality jobs over the next 25 years.
Matthieu Hue, Chief Executive of EDF power solutions UK and Ireland, expressed gratitude to the local communities for their support. He stated that seeing the wind farm fully operational is a major milestone. He also mentioned that the NnG wind farm will bring significant benefits to the local economy for its 25-year lifespan [7].
The NnG project has directly contributed around GBP 200 million to the economy through work with local supply chains, including more than 50 suppliers based in and around Scotland during the wind farm's construction [8]. The electricity generated by Neart na Gaoithe is enough to power around 375,000 homes [9].
The wind farm's operation will offset over 400,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year, according to the developer [10]. First Minister John Swinney visited the NnG's O&M base in Eyemouth and met with local people working on the project, as well as schoolchildren and community groups during his visit [11].
Electricity from Neart na Gaoithe is transmitted via a subsea export cable from the offshore substation to Thorntonloch Beach. An underground onshore export cable then feeds the electricity to the national grid [12].
The completion of the Neart na Gaoithe wind farm marks a significant step forward in Scotland's renewable energy ambitions. With its 54 turbines generating up to 450 MW of clean electricity, the wind farm is set to play a crucial role in powering Scotland's homes and businesses for years to come.
