NRW Invests €320M in Münster's Battery Cell Production Hub
The state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is investing heavily in sustainable technology, committing around 320 million euros for land and buildings in Münster. The city was chosen in 2019 to establish and run a research production facility for battery cells, known as the FFB Fab.
The FFB Fab, spanning 20,000 square meters, is on track to finish by the end of 2027. It will focus on developing and producing car batteries on an industrial scale, efficiently and sustainably. The project is backed by a coalition of CDU and Greens in the state government.
The Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space is also supporting the initiative, providing up to 500 million euros for research facilities and projects. The unique car battery production facility is set to open in late 2027, serving various industries such as automotive, energy, robotics, and aviation, among others.
Currently, over 140 employees are working at the FFB Prefab, which houses a model line for complete car battery production on a pilot scale. The groundbreaking ceremony for the second construction phase took place on October 1, 2023. The FFB is part of the research location 'BatteryCityMunster', collaborating with the Battery Research Center MEET and other research partners.
With the completion of the FFB Fab in 2027, Münster aims to become a leading hub for car battery production and research, fostering sustainable technologies and creating new job opportunities.
