NPS Temporarily Closes GW Parkway Southbound Lanes for Tree Maintenance
The National Park Service (NPS) will temporarily close southbound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway for essential tree maintenance work. The closures aim to minimize disruption to commuters and are part of larger tree care efforts along the parkway between Mount Vernon and south of Alexandria.
The work is scheduled for October 1, 2, 6, and 7 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., weather permitting. To avoid peak rush hour traffic periods, the maintenance will take place during off-peak hours. During the work periods, southbound traffic will be diverted onto Park Terrace Drive. The George Washington Memorial Parkway, a National Historic Parkway, runs along the Virginia side of the Potomac River, connecting Alexandria to the Beltway.
The NPS, responsible for the protection and management of national parks and other protected areas, will oversee the tree maintenance work. The closures are necessary for the safety of visitors, environmental preservation, and the protection of the historical and cultural heritage along the parkway.
