Northeast India's Logistics Potential: Gateway to Bangladesh & Southeast Asia
The northeast states of India, home to over 45 million people, are poised to become a significant trade gateway to Bangladesh and Southeast Asia. With a combined GDP contribution of 2.8% in 2019-2020, the region is set to benefit from a major logistics conference and infrastructure developments.
The NE Logistics Conclave 2022, scheduled for December 6 in Guwahati, Assam, will focus on advancing trade linkages, simplifying export procedures, and promoting export schemes. The event, organized by a national industry chamber in partnership with central authorities, aims to bridge first and last-mile gaps and foster balanced logistics ecosystem growth. Topics for discussion also include strengthening logistics human capital.
The northeast states boast impressive infrastructure, with 17 air cargo terminals and over 2.5 lakhs MT cold storage capacity. The region is witnessing rapid growth in road and rail infrastructure. To further boost connectivity, two multimodal logistics parks are under development in Tripura and Assam. The Central Government has already sanctioned over INR 26,000 crore for the region's development through various schemes.
With the potential to drive further GDP growth, improving logistics infrastructure and connectivity in the northeast states is crucial. The NE Logistics Conclave 2022 is a significant step towards realizing this potential, as it brings together stakeholders to discuss and plan for the region's logistics development.
