North Rhine-Westphalia's Construction Sector Slumps in June 2019
North Rhine-Westphalia's construction sector experienced a mixed performance in the first half of 2019. While overall production for the first six months was up 1.2% compared to the previous year, June 2019 saw a significant drop of 9.9%.
Looking at the residential construction sector, public residential construction saw the largest decrease of 23.7%. Commercial and industrial residential construction followed with a decline of 11.5%, and overall residential construction was down 10.7%.
Production in residential construction was down 12.0% and in civil engineering by 7.3% compared to June 2018. Breaking down the civil engineering sector, other public civil engineering had a decrease of 11.5%, road construction was down 6.7%, and commercial and industrial civil engineering saw a 4.5% decrease.
Despite the overall positive trend in the first half of the year, the sharp decline in June 2019 is a cause for concern. The significant drops in both residential and civil engineering sectors, particularly in public residential construction, suggest potential challenges ahead for the region's construction industry.
