NIST Unveils Revised PNT Profile for Enhanced Cybersecurity Risk Management
NIST has released Revision 1 of the Foundational Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) Profile. This update, based on the NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF), offers tailored guidance for organizations to manage PNT-related security risks.
The new profile includes five additional subcategories and two appendices: D and E. Appendix D provides practical advice on integrating the PNT Profile into cybersecurity risk management. Appendix E offers insights into creating custom PNT profiles for organizations.
Revision 1 was developed following Executive Order 13905, issued in February 2020. It aims to enhance national resilience in PNT services. The revision process involved NIST and various industry and government stakeholders. Key discussions included improved accuracy requirements, interoperability guidelines, and updated validation methods.
The updated PNT Profile helps organizations identify PNT-dependent systems, choose suitable PNT sources, recognize disturbances, and effectively manage related security risks. With the new subcategories and appendices, organizations can better tailor the profile to their unique missions and environments.
