Nissan Bolsters North American Logistics, Adapts to Border Challenges

Nissan has bolstered its intermodal finished vehicle logistics (FVL) across North America, safeguarding deliveries amidst disruptions. The Japanese automaker has invested in this sector to ensure smooth transportation of its vehicles, particularly in light of challenges at the US/Mexico border.

Nissan's commitment to FVL was discussed at the FVL North America 2024 conference, where a speaker delved into the main topics and opportunities in the sector, including the integration of electric vehicles (EVs) into logistics planning. Despite the speaker's name not being provided, their insights highlighted Nissan's proactive approach to logistics.

Historically, Nissan has utilised haulaway trucks to ferry vehicles from Mexico to the US. However, recent disruptions at the US/Mexico border have posed challenges to Nissan's logistics providers and the wider North American network. Approximately 40% of Nissan's Mexican production is exported to the US, making border efficiency crucial.

In response to these challenges, Nissan has shifted its transportation strategy. It has moved away from relying heavily on rail, using instead dedicated vessels for vehicle transportation. This shift allows Nissan to manage its logistics on a monthly basis, providing greater flexibility and resilience.

Nissan's investment in intermodal FVL and its shift to dedicated vessels reflect the company's commitment to ensuring reliable vehicle deliveries across North America. Despite challenges, Nissan continues to adapt and innovate in its logistics strategies, demonstrating a forward-thinking approach to supply chain management.
