New York State Funds 50 Farm Water Conservation Projects in $25M Push
New York State has allocated $25 million to fund 50 farm water conservation projects across the state. This significant investment combines $14 million from the Environmental Protection Fund and $11 million from the 2022 Environmental Bond Act, marking the largest single round of funding in the history of the Agricultural Nonpoint Source Pollution Abatement and Control Program.
Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the program has directed over $250 million to on-farm projects since its inception. This year's funding reflects a growing alignment between farm policy and climate resilience, with the state's FY2025 budget allocating $81.8 million for agricultural sustainability programs. The $25 million injection aims to make environmental strategies more affordable for farmers and strengthen partnerships between state agencies, local soil and water districts, and farms.
Projects range from less than $200,000 for single-farm initiatives to multi-million-dollar grants for regional conservation efforts. Counties with large dairy and crop operations, such as Wyoming, Delaware, and Onondaga, received some of the largest awards. The projects include manure management systems, stream buffers, and cover crops to improve water quality and prevent runoff. This funding is framed as both environmental stewardship and economic resilience, ensuring farms remain competitive, profitable, and sustainable while meeting stricter climate and water regulations.
With this $25 million investment, New York State continues its commitment to environmental protection and agricultural sustainability. The funding will support 50 projects across the state, benefiting both the environment and the economic resilience of local farms.
