Netflix Axing 'One Piece' From Its Streaming Service Soon
Ahoy, Matey! Prepare Yerself for One Piece News!
One Piece season 2 has wrapped up filming and is set to hit Netflix in 2025, but don't count on co-showrunner Matt Owens being around for much longer. After dedicating over half a decade to this swashbuckling adaptation, he's saying "walk the plank" and stepping away from the show to prioritize his mental health.
Here's his parting shot:
"Living the dream as a co-showrunner on One Piece for the last 6 years has been a wild ride. It's time to take a breather and focus on myself, my therapy sessions, and ranking up in Marvel Rivals. Cheers to the crew, cast and everyone who's supported me. Catch ya on the flip side!"
Netflix is fully on board with Owens' decision and has shown their support on Instagram, posting a heartfelt message of gratitude and well-wishes.

So who's steering the Going Merry now? After season 1, Steven Maeda decided to set sail as an executive producer, leaving his co-pilot duties to Joe Tracz, who's seamlessly guiding the ship for season 2. With Owens taking a holler and heading for the shore, it looks like Tracz will be single-handedly hoisting the Jolly Roger for season 3 (unconfirmed by Netflix, but we're betting our doubloons on it!).
Gotta admit, it's disappointing to see a key pirate like Owens set sail, but we can't fault him for wanting to take time to fortify the ol' soul. Hopefully, he'll reappear down the line like a ghost ship, but if he wants to strike out on his own, we'll give him a hearty "Shiver me timbers!"
