Nepal's Journey: Evolution from Street Life to Political Power
Nepal, a country long plagued by a remittance-based economy and a patronage system, is at a crossroads. The fires of September 2025 have cleared the ground for a new Nepal, and it is now up to this generation of Nepalis to build a future where the promise of peace, dignity, and prosperity is finally realized for all.
The catalyst for change was a significant nationwide revolt that occurred in 2025, led by a youth-led movement known as the "Gen Z movement." The initial protests were a genuine expression of frustration, but subsequent violence and destruction were reportedly instigated by other political actors.
The movement was leaderless, decentralized, and organized online, with slogans like "#EnoughIsEnough" and "Shut down corruption and not social media." The crisis was sparked by the government's ban on 26 major social media platforms, perceived as an attempt to silence dissent. The ban affected over two million Nepalese citizens, many of whom work abroad and rely on social media for communication with their families.
The retail sector, including popular supermarkets like Bhat-Bhateni, also suffered extensive damage. The 48-hour agitation that followed the initial protests caused widespread violence and destruction, affecting both public and private property. The government's heavy-handed response to peaceful protests resulted in dozens of deaths and over a thousand injuries, escalating the situation.
The crisis is a systemic failure with roots in the flawed political and economic model established after the 2006 peace accord, creating a "Remittance-Patronage State." Over the past decade, Nepal's economy has been predicated on exporting its people, leading to an "absent population," a fraying social fabric, and a youth unemployment crisis.
The political system in Nepal is built on elite capture and a culture of impunity, with the failure to deliver transitional justice for the atrocities of the 1996-2006 Maoist insurgency being a significant issue. Systemic corruption, which fueled the 2025 protests, is a direct continuation of this legacy, with tens of thousands of complaints of serious human rights violations remaining unaddressed.
The path forward for Nepal requires an integrated, three-pillar strategy to transform it from a "Remittance-Patronage State" into a modern, productive, and inclusive "Developmental State." The strategy includes forging a new national purpose, an economic paradigm shift, and rebuilding trust. This includes initiating a broad, nationwide consultative process to draft a "Nepal Vision 2050," addressing the youth employment crisis, and radical transparency measures to restore international confidence.
A new institutional mechanism, the "Transition Support Group," is proposed to anchor the reform process and provide essential expertise. The group consists of independent think tanks, public intellectuals, and civil society organizations. The success of any reform agenda hinges on restoring the shattered confidence of both Nepali citizens and the international community, with the appointment of Sushila Karki being a powerful first step.
The experiences of Sri Lanka and Rwanda offer contrasting lessons for Nepal. Sri Lanka's recent economic collapse is a cautionary tale, while Rwanda's national transformation offers an inspirational lesson in building a capable state and driving development. Nepal's education system produces graduates who are functionally unemployable, creating a tragic skills mismatch. The private sector, particularly large conglomerates like the Chaudhary Group and the IME Group, suffered significant losses.
The crisis has created a clear mandate for profound change, requiring sustained political will, active citizen participation, and steadfast international support. The fires of September 2025 have cleared the ground for a new Nepal, and it is now up to this generation of Nepalis to build a future where the promise of peace, dignity, and prosperity is finally realized for all.
