Nemak, a Mexican auto parts manufacturer, ventures into the Romanian market through acquisition.
Nemak Expands into Romanian Market with Acquisition from GF Casting Solutions
Mexican automotive supplier Nemak, a global leader in the development and production of aluminum components, is entering the Romanian market through the purchase of the local lightweight components business of Swiss company Georg Fischer (GF). The deal, expected to close in the second half of 2025, is part of a larger agreement that involves the acquisition of the entire lightweight components division of GF Casting Solutions.
The transaction, worth approximately USD 336 million, includes GF Casting Solutions’ entire automotive business, which generated around USD 707 million in revenue and an adjusted EBITDA of USD 91 million in 2024. The acquired assets feature an R&D center in Switzerland and nine production facilities located strategically across Austria, China, Romania, Germany, and the United States, employing approximately 2,500 people.
Among the production sites in Romania, the acquisition specifically includes the lightweight components factories in Pitești and Scornicești. These factories specialize in aluminum die casting and further processing of castings, with a strong emphasis on post-processing. The product portfolio focuses on highly complex aluminum and magnesium components, with about 80% dedicated to e-mobility, structural, and chassis applications and the remaining 20% in other component areas.
The customer base comprises leading OEMs from Europe and China, such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Porsche, Volkswagen, Volvo, BYD, and others. This acquisition supports Nemak’s strategic objective to expand its technological capabilities beyond internal combustion engine powertrain components, notably increasing its footprint in electrification and lightweight solutions for sustainable mobility.
It also broadens Nemak’s global presence and diversifies its customer base while bringing in a skilled workforce aligned with its innovation focus. The Romanian subsidiary of GF Casting Solutions employs approximately 500 people, according to data consulted by Profit.ro.
Not included in the transaction are GF's iron foundry in Leipzig, Germany, and aerospace and industrial gas turbine operations, including a location in Arad, Romania. The foundries in Pitesț and Scornicești were originally purchased by GF in 2017 from the Italian company Eucasting, but were not part of the agreement with Nemak.
In a separate development, Swiss company Precicast Industrial acquired the GF subsidiary in Arad in 2018, specializing in the casting of high-precision metal parts. Recently, GF has initiated the divestiture process for the Arad-based asset and its aerospace and industrial gas turbine activities in Novazzano, Stabio (Switzerland).
In summary, this acquisition marks a significant step for Nemak in transitioning toward sustainable mobility by broadening its product offerings and geographic coverage in the lightweight automotive parts market. The strategic expansion into Romania brings a global leader in aluminum component production to the local market, making a positive impact on the Romanian automotive industry.
