In Almaty, Dep'artment of Internal Affairs (DID) has rolled out an innovative approach to curb traffic accidents by artificially slimming down select readways, according to their official Instagram account. In a bid to tackle speeding-related mishaps, the department intends to test mechanisms adopted overseas.

Artificial road narrowing has been carried out on sections of the Almaty - Shelek - Khorgos highway (near Shelek village) and the Almaty - Bishkek highway (near Berktas village), as per the DID statement. Specialists claim these measures help drivers feel a more dominant presence of traffic rules, encouraging them to be more vigilant.

The DID commented, "An analysis of road traffic accidents showed that speeding is the main culprit. To prevent such transgressions and safeguard human life, it was decided to gauge the efficiency of mechanisms effective in other countries."

Apart from improved vigilance, specialists attribute the success of this strategy to its cost-effectiveness. "This method is among the low-cost but effective engineering solutions in the realm of road safety," the department clarified.

Almaty region police are proactive in implementing holistic approaches to road safety under the 'Safe Road' Operation, including stricter law enforcement, information campaigns, and infrastructure enhancements.

As reported earlier, due to a surge in road accidents, notably on highways, Kazakhstan has adopted road narrowing as a safety measure, following the example of OECD and US countries. Besides this, Kazakh police have also incorporated drone surveillance and undercover patrols to ensure safety.

Further, the Akmola region's targeted roads for narrowing were disclosed recently. However, the results of this unconventional method in Kazakhstan remain to be seen.

Previously, statistics from the General Prosecutor's Office revealed that road accident rates in Kazakhstan skyrocketed by almost 100% in 2024, with over 30,000 cases. Nearly 40,000 individuals were injured, and more than 2,500 lives were lost during this time.

Artificial Road Narrowing: A Deep Dive

Artificial road narrowing refers to reducing a road's width to alter driver behavior, either using physical barriers like bollards or visual markings. When implemented properly, the strategy helps decrease speeding, increase driver caution, and constrain traffic.

  1. Curbing Speeding: Narrower roads force vehicles to slow down, essential for reducing accident severity and granting drivers ample response time in unpredictable situations.
  2. Heightened Attention: Fewer lanes lead to a sense of discomfort for drivers at higher speeds, encouraging more attentive driving practices.
  3. Improved Pedestrian Safety: Reduction in traffic volume and speed potentially creates a safer zone for pedestrians, particularly in urban settings.

Implementing artificial road narrowing calls for careful consideration:

  1. Data Collection: Analyze traffic patterns and accident hotspots.
  2. Design and Planning: Develop a narrowing strategy that suits local conditions and traffic patterns.
  3. Community Engagement: Collaborate with citizens to inform them about the intentions behind the modifications.
  4. Physical Implementation: Execute the narrowing project by installing physical barriers or markings.

Besides improving safety, well-structured road narrowing could also ameliorate traffic flow, favor pedestrian and cyclist safety, and potentially lead to reduced accident rates and reduced accident intensity.

  1. In the wake of Almaty's initiative to combat traffic accidents through artificial road narrowing, other sectors like finance and industry might take a cue from this unconventional approach in tackling issues within their respective domains.
  2. As the Department of Internal Affairs in Almaty's efforts to implement traffic safety measures have extended to the realm of general-news, it reminds us of the ongoing debate concerning crime-and-justice, where similar proactive steps could potentially bring about reductions in illegal activities.
  3. The success of the road narrowing strategy in curbing speeding-related accidents in Almaty could inspire similar interventions in transportation networks internationally, potentially leading to a sharp decline in global road accident rates and fatalities.
