Mukesh Ambani's RIL USA Buys Historic NYC Terminal, Plans Unclear

The historic freight terminal at 11 Hubert Street in Tribeca, New York City, has been vacant for over a decade. The building, a former Individual Landmark, has changed hands several times, most recently being purchased by Reliance Industries Limited (RIL USA), headed by Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, for $17 million. Despite speculation, there are no publicly confirmed plans for the building as of October 2025.

The building's journey began in the mid-aughts when it was converted into offices and apartments, but it has remained largely unchanged since. In 2018, tech billionaire Robert Pera bought the property for around $20 million and hired architect Eric Cobb to design a megamansion. However, the plans were criticized by landmarks and the community board, and the project was eventually modified. After four years on the market with several price cuts, RIL USA purchased the building in 2022.

The building's previous owner, architect Winka Dubbeldam, sold it in 2014 for $15.3 million. Mukesh Ambani, the richest man in India, oversees a conglomerate controlling energy, data, mobile networks, retail, and finance. He owns a 27-story, 400,000-square-foot home in Mumbai, reportedly the world's second most expensive residence. Despite his wealth and influence, there are currently no confirmed plans for the Tribeca property.

As of October 2025, there are no publicly confirmed plans for the building at 11 Hubert Street, Tribeca, New York City. Any potential changes or renovations would need to be approved by the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC). Interested parties should monitor public hearings, the DOB, and international news sources for updates. Until official plans are submitted and approved, the building's future remains uncertain.
