Monthly subscription scam under investigation: Be cautious of fraudulent offers with intentionally low prices

Attention all commuters in Chemnitz! Beware of a fraudulent offer circulating online for heavily discounted monthly passes – it's a trap!

By Stella Kreuzer

Chemnitz - For the past few days, an intriguing offer for extremely affordable monthly passes supposedly from the Chemnitzer Verkehrs-AG (CVAG) has been making its rounds on the internet. But be on your guard, it's a scam!

Here's the quick lowdown:

  • CVAG cautions about a fake monthly pass being marketed at an unbelievable price
  • Offer surfaced on Facebook: 6 months of unlimited travel for just 2.35 €
  • CVAG affirms: Offer is a deception
  • Non-authentic company profile and specials not endorsed by CVAG*folks should stick to the official website

A Tall Tale of a Too-Good-to-Be-True Offer

On June 2nd, an offer for low-cost monthly passes popped up on Facebook with the catchy headline: "Join CVAG's anniversary celebrations with fantastically budgeted subscription monthly pass - 6 months of unlimited travel for merely 2.35 €!" Limited to 500 tickets, the ad even came with three pictures to boost its credibility.

At first sight, it appeared as a sincere offer – even comments under the post mirrored that conviction.

The Red Flag Rises

however, the piece of news you've been waiting for: on their official Facebook page on Friday, CVAG announced: "Dear citizens, there's a bogus offer doing the rounds on Facebook, appropriating our name and also our images."

Furthermore, the transport company insists this profile and the deals aren't from them. Customers are urged to only use the website or the service center for all deals.

"We are currently pursuing legal action," it concludes.

Swindlers Can't Keep a Good Deal Down

While no recent information could be found about the status of this scam or tips to dodge it, here are some general guidelines to steer clear of scams:

How to Avoid Scams

  1. Check Authentic Sources: Always verify offers or promotions from companies (in this case, CVAG) by visiting their official websites or social media channels. If it seems too good to be true, or isn't listed on official platforms, it's probably a hoax.
  2. Watch Out for Warning Signs: Be mindful of deals that ask for sensitive information, like passwords, credit card numbers, or personal details. Genuine companies won't demand such information unsolicited.
  3. Employ Secure Links: Abstain from clicking links conveyed via emails or texts. Instead, manually type the official website's URL in your browser to access any promotions.
  4. Stay Aware: Follow local news and consumer protection agencies for updates on scams happening in your area.
  5. Report Straightaway: If you suspect a scam, report it to local authorities or consumer protection agencies.

If you require more details about the scam or need additional assistance, consider contacting CVAG directly or seeking advice from local consumer protection resources.

  1. Be cautious when encountering business deals that seem too good to be true, as in the case of the unbelievably low-priced monthly passes from Chemnitzer Verkehrs-AG (CVAG) that are currently circulating online.
  2. To avoid falling victim to such financial scams, consumers should verify offers or promotions by checking authentic sources such as a company's official website, like in the case of CVAG, and remain vigilant about deals requiring sensitive information.
