MFS Investment Management Marks 97 Years of Success with $527B in Assets

MFS Investment Management, a prominent player in the investment world, has a rich history dating back nearly a century. Today, it stands as a major institutional investor, managing assets for both private and institutional clients, with a significant presence in Boston.

The company's journey began in 1924 when Sherman Adams, Charles Learoyd, and Ashton Carr established the Massachusetts Investors Trust (MIT), the first publicly accessible investment fund in the US. Initially known as MIT, the company was later reorganized in 1969 and has since operated under the name MFS Investment Management.

MFS, now owned by Massachusetts Financial Services Company, has grown significantly over the years. By the end of September 2020, its total managed assets had reached a staggering $548 billion USD (€468 billion). As of 2020, MFS managed a substantial $527 billion USD (€452 billion), with about half of that invested in funds. This impressive growth is a testament to the company's strategic investment management.

MFS Investment Management's success can be attributed to its consistent focus on selected US standard stocks, which has yielded an average annual return of around 9% over its nearly 100-year history. Despite surviving major economic events like the Great Depression and World War II, the MIT fund continues to attract investments today, solidifying its position as a reliable investment management company.
