Malfunctioning smoke signal: Saukopftunnel in Weinheim continues to be shut down
Saukopftunnel Remains Closed Due to Ventilation and Smoke Flap Issues
The Saukopftunnel, a crucial traffic link between the Rhein-Neckar district and Birkenau (Bergstraße district), has been closed since mid-2025 due to issues with faulty smoke flaps and an uncontrollable ventilation system.
The Regierungspräsidium Karlsruhe is overseeing the necessary remediation work to address these problems. As of late July and August 2025, the tunnel remains closed, and a definitive reopening date has yet to be announced.
The 2.7 km long tunnel is an essential connection between the Bergstraße and Odenwald regions. Firefighting experts are utilizing the tunnel for training and exercises related to smoke and fire safety, reflecting ongoing concerns and preparedness efforts connected to the tunnel’s issues.
The Karlsruhe Regional Council announced the extended closure on August 16, citing difficulties in replacing the faulty components as the primary reason. The closure is due to a faulty smoke flap control system in the tunnel, with more than half of the smoke extraction flaps installed in the ceiling no longer controllable.
The unavailability of necessary parts and the need for immediate exchange of the faulty components have contributed to the extended closure. A safe smoke extraction must be ensured before the tunnel can be reopened for traffic.
The prolonged closure of the Saukopftunnel may lead to increased traffic problems, particularly in Weinheim city center during peak hours. Commuters are advised to continue using the signposted detours indefinitely.
This situation recalls the Mannheim Fahrlachtunnel's two-year closure due to inadequate ventilation. The parts in question were installed in 2008 and need to be repaired on-site. The cause of the failure of the control components is currently under investigation with high pressure.
The Karlsruhe Regional Council and the Rhein-Neckar district are involved in the decision to keep the tunnel closed. The repair work's complexity and the unforeseen defect in the smoke extraction flaps are contributing to the uncertainty surrounding the reopening date.
In summary:
- Current status: Closed due to faulty smoke flaps and uncontrollable ventilation system.
- Duration of closure: Extended and ongoing as of August 2025, with no confirmed reopening date yet.
- Reason: Safety system defects requiring complex repairs and renewal.
- Relevant authorities: Regierungspräsidium Karlsruhe managing the repairs.
Commuters are advised to stay informed and follow any traffic updates regarding the Saukopftunnel's reopening.
