Major Data Breach Exposes 870,000 Records; Volvo, Cities Affected
A major data breach has affected numerous organizations, with over 870,000 data sets compromised. The attack, carried out by the ransomware group DataCarry, has exposed sensitive information including names, dates of birth, addresses, email contacts, and ID data. Among the affected entities are Volvo North America, city administrations, regional authorities, and other companies.
The incident began with a cyberattack on Swedish IT service provider Miljödata in the summer of 2025. This attack, perpetrated by the DataCarry group, resulted in the compromise of personal data belonging to employees of Volvo and other companies such as SAS and Lund University. Volvo has since informed its affected employees that their names and social security numbers were accessed during the breach.
Volvo has taken steps to mitigate the impact of the attack, offering free monitoring services to affected employees to protect against potential identity theft. DataCarry, which first appeared in May 2025, has since carried out several dozen attacks, following the common extortion model of data exfiltration and ransom demands.
The DataCarry ransomware attack has highlighted the need for robust cybersecurity measures across various sectors. With over 870,000 data sets compromised, the incident has affected numerous organizations and individuals. Affected parties are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect their personal information.
