Luxurycar brands Bentley and Ferrari need to keep a close eye on BYD's high-end division, as it's making its way onto the scene.
Chinese carmaker BYD is making waves in the European automotive industry with its plans to introduce its luxury brand, Yangwang, in 2026. This move marks the first time a Chinese automaker aims to target the European luxury market.
The launch will follow BYD's introduction of its Denza brand, which is expected to arrive in Europe in early 2026. According to BYD vice president Stella Li, Yangwang will come to Europe after Denza [1][2][3].
The initial Yangwang models confirmed for the European market include:
- Yangwang U8: A large, high-end hybrid off-road SUV offering extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) technology. This model emphasizes luxury and off-road capability, targeting competitors like Bentley's Bentayga in the luxury SUV segment [1][2].
- Yangwang U9: A flagship electric supercar delivering an impressive 960 kW of power and advanced capabilities such as a 'jumping' feature enabled by its quad-motor setup. The U9 aims to rival sports car marques like Porsche and Ferrari through its high performance and cutting-edge tech [2][5].
Additional models expected to follow include the Yangwang U7 electric sedan, further expanding the brand’s lineup in Europe after these initial launches [1][3].
The Yangwang U8 features Land Rover Defender-esque styling, an electric powertrain, and a range-extender petrol engine. It also boasts a 49.1 kWh battery pack that provides an electric-only range of 112 miles. The U8 is claimed to function as a boat for short periods, such as escaping flash flooding, and is packed with connected technology [1].
The Yangwang U9, on the other hand, is an electric supercar with a top speed of over 230 mph, a quad-motor drivetrain, and a price tag of around £180,000 in China. If brought to Europe, the U9 could cost significantly less than its £2 million rival, the Rimac Nevera [1].
The introduction of Yangwang's luxury vehicles could potentially disrupt the European automotive market, particularly for luxury and supercar brands. BYD's entry into the luxury market with Yangwang could potentially ruffle some feathers in the European automotive industry [1][2][3].
BYD already sells competitively-priced electric cars like the Atto 3, Seal, and Dolphin in the UK and several European countries. However, due to the 17% EU tariff on BYD electric vehicles, along with conversion costs such as adapting the cars for right-hand drive markets, Yangwang vehicles will likely be priced significantly higher in Europe compared to China [1][3].
Whether BYD plans to position Yangwang as a more affordable alternative or directly compete with ultra-luxury brands such as Bentley and Ferrari remains unclear. But one thing is certain: the new vehicles from Yangwang could challenge the biggest names in automotive.
