Lucid EV Sets Guinness World Record for Quickest Sprint by an Electric Production Car
California-based electric vehicle (EV) startup Lucid has made history by breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest journey by an electric car on a single charge. The achievement was set by the Lucid Air Grand Touring, which travelled an impressive 1,205 kilometers (749 miles) on a single charge, surpassing the previous record held by the Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+ by a significant margin.
The record-breaking journey began in Silvaplana, Switzerland, and ended in Munich, Germany. The Lucid Air Grand Touring was driven by Umit Sabanci and Kenneth Schofield, with Michael Van Runkle, a contributor to a certain website, joining them for part of the trip. Van Runkle, who also had the opportunity to drive the 2026 Lucid Gravity, Lucid's electric SUV, described the Lucid Air Grand Touring as "arguably the world's best EV."
The Lucid Air Grand Touring's impressive feat is attributed to its ultra-high-voltage battery architecture, precise battery thermal control, aerodynamic design, and software-optimized electric motors. This combination makes it the range leader among electric vehicles. The Grand Touring edition of the Lucid Air is equipped with a 123kWh battery pack, boasting industry-best efficiency.
Eric Bach, the senior vice president of product and chief engineer at Lucid, commented on the achievement, stating it as proof of "the technological edge that defines Lucid." Guinness World Records has stated that the record set by the Lucid Air Grand Touring is about "showing what electric vehicles are capable of today - not just in theory, but in action."
While the Lucid Gravity, the company's first SUV, has a starting price of $94,900 with the Grand Touring package pushing the price into the six figures, the company aims to make its benefits accessible to a wider audience in the future. The 2024 Lucid Gravity model is designed to target the heart of today's market, following the Air sedan.
The Lucid Gravity initially achieved a 450-mile EPA range estimate, but during testing on sinuous highways, snaking canyons, and a semi-serious off-roading demonstration, it proved to have even greater capabilities. Van Runkle, who drove both the Lucid Air Grand Touring and the 2026 Lucid Gravity, praised the vehicles' handling, wealth of storage space, seating for seven, and described the Gravity as a "rocketship that can outhandle most sports cars."
The previous record for this category was set a month ago by a Mercedes-Benz EQS 450, with a distance of 649 miles. The Ford Mustang Mach-E managed approximately 950 kilometers (590 miles) on a single charge, which is still a remarkable achievement, but the Lucid Air Grand Touring has clearly set a new standard for electric vehicles.
