LNG Project in Quebec Not Yet Deemed National Interest
The federal government has recently passed legislation to expedite major projects deemed crucial to the nation's interests. Meanwhile, Marinvest Energy Canada's proposal for an LNG site near Baie-Comeau, Quebec, is still in its early stages and has not yet gained national interest status.
Marinvest has been lobbying the federal government regarding a potential natural gas pipeline and export facility near Baie-Comeau. However, the project is still in its early development stages, with no defined project submitted for review yet. Federal Energy Minister Tim Hodgson has stated that the scale of the proposed LNG facility is not significant enough to warrant national interest consideration at this point.
The Quebec government has not yet received a formal proposal for the LNG facility and has not commented on its potential interest. Any LNG project in Quebec would need to be supported by affected First Nation communities, according to Minister Hodgson. Senior federal officials had previously praised the LNG export plan, stating it could export substantial volumes to Europe. A public servant from the Natural Resources Department met with Marinvest representatives to discuss the LNG plan.
Despite the federal government's recent investment of $22 million to boost battery production capacity in Canada, the Marinvest LNG project in Quebec is still in its early stages and has not yet been deemed of national interest. Minister Hodgson welcomes Marinvest to re-engage with the project, stating it would be evaluated like any other project.
