LEW Verteilnetz Unveils Grid Solution for 40MW Battery Storage in Balzhausen

Grid connection capacities are scarce, posing challenges for photovoltaic plant and storage system planners. LEW Verteilnetz has stepped in, promising grid connection to several renewable energy projects in Balzhausen, including a 40 megawatt battery storage system by Green Flexibility.

Green Flexibility, based in Kempten, is developing, building, and operating large-scale electricity storage systems. Their latest project is a 40 megawatt battery storage facility in Balzhausen, with a capacity of 80 megawatt-hours. This project, in collaboration with LEW Verteilnetz, aims to stabilize the power system by balancing renewable energy supply and demand.

LEW Verteilnetz is testing a new concept called 'feed-in socket' to address grid connection issues. This involves grid-neutral integration of the battery storage system, preventing grid bottlenecks. The project allows the grid connection capacity to be exceeded by 60 percent, demonstrating a potential solution to the widespread problem of limited connection capacities faced by most grid operators. A recent industry survey by the German Solar Industry Association supports these findings.

Green Flexibility's 40 megawatt storage system in Balzhausen is on track to operate by early 2026. Both Christoph Lienert, co-founder and CEO of Green Flexibility, and Barbara Plura, asset manager and technical network planner at LEW Verteilnetz, express satisfaction with the project's progress. This collaboration showcases effective cooperation between grid and storage operators, paving the way for more efficient renewable energy integration.
