Latvian Egg Producers Demand Tariff Reinstatement Amid Ukrainian Surge

The Latvian Association of Egg Producers, led by Gaigals, is pushing for the reinstatement of import tariffs on eggs. This follows a surge in egg imports from outside the EU, particularly from Ukraine, which has put local producers at a disadvantage. The largest egg production company in the Baltics, Balticovo, has expressed concern about this development.

The influx of eggs from Ukraine began after the EU abolished import duties on their products. Within just one and a half months, the import quota was filled. However, the reintroduction of import duties did not curb the volume of egg imports. This has led farmers' organizations to call for a review of the current import arrangements.

Balticovo, feeling the pinch, has seen its profitability decrease. This leaves less room for investment in development. The company, along with other local producers, is struggling to compete with Ukrainian producers who have lower production costs. As a result, Latvian egg producers are selling their products below cost to stay competitive.

The Latvian United Poultry Association supports the reintroduction of fair import duties. They believe this would balance production conditions and directly support the Ukrainian government. Meanwhile, small Latvian companies are worried as their products are being pushed off the shelves by the influx of cheaper imports.

Egg imports into the EU have quadrupled in recent years, putting significant pressure on local producers. The European Commission and Parliament have decided to extend the abolition of import duties and introduce a rapid reaction mechanism. However, the Latvian Association of Egg Producers continues to advocate for the reintroduction of import tariffs to level the playing field for local producers.
