Lamborghini's Design Director Discusses the Cinema-Worthy Drama Behind the Fenomeno, with Its Impressive 1,065 HP
Lamborghini's Fenomeno: A Hypercar with a Cinematic Twist
Lamborghini has unveiled its latest creation, the Fenomeno, a limited-edition hypercar that pushes the boundaries of design and technology. The Fenomeno, which will produce only 29 units plus one for Lamborghini's archives, is an evolution of the brand's iconic aggressive themes, blending elegance, functionality, and a touch of science fiction.
The Fenomeno's design inspiration can be traced back to a secret "sculpture car" prototype developed after Stephan Winkelmann’s return to Lamborghini in 2020. This prototype has heavily influenced the brand’s future design language, embodying a refined yet aggressive aesthetic that celebrates 20 years of Lamborghini’s Centro Stile.
Compared to earlier Lamborghini icons like the Miura and the Reventon, the Fenomeno represents a clear evolution in both form and technological integration. While the Miura featured organic, flowing lines, the Reventon embraced sharp, angular styling, the Fenomeno takes this angular aggression further but adds a greater level of elegance and clarity.
The Fenomeno's body, when compared to the Revuelto, has been designed in a graphical way, with fewer lines, broad shoulders and surfaces, a long tail, and a peaky front. The interior features sinister, retro-modern elements, with the central display accompanied by a ventilative protuberance with ambient lights, reminiscent of two alien eyes.
The Fenomeno's interior does not repeat the restraint seen in its exterior design. Some aspects of the interior do not necessarily improve driving performance, but are designed to look cool. The new hard-shell racing seats have an android-like appearance, while the overall design is influenced by elements from science fiction, such as Battlestar Galactica.
Mitja Borkert, the brand's design director, believes that the interior elements are not always pragmatic, but are designed to evoke a sense of excitement and a cinematic driving experience. He compares the Fenomeno's design to a shark, with its sleek, aerodynamic lines and smooth, integrated rear.
Borkert explains that the simplicity in the Fenomeno's design harks back to Lamborghini’s earlier vehicles like the Miura and the first Countach. He describes the Fenomeno as "hyper-elegant," but also aggressive, a balance that is evident in its two-layer body construction featuring exposed carbon fiber elements and its novel air intake placements.
The Fenomeno is based on the contemporary gasoline/electric hybrid that motivates Lamborghini's production flagship, the Revuelto. It boasts a hybrid powertrain and aerodynamic improvements (30% better than the Revuelto), making it a true testament to Lamborghini's commitment to innovation and performance.
In summary, the Fenomeno is a masterpiece of design and technology, a limited-edition hypercar that pays homage to Lamborghini's storied past while forging a dynamic future direction. With its cinematic interior, sleek exterior, and cutting-edge technology, the Fenomeno is sure to captivate car enthusiasts and leave a lasting impression.
