Karnataka government propels plans for 114-km elevated corridor and tunnel road project in Bengaluru: DK Shivakumar underscores support

Karnataka Deputy CM Announces Plans for Bengaluru's Tunnel Road Project

In a significant move to enhance connectivity within Bengaluru, the state's Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar, announced on Saturday that tenders for the city's ambitious tunnel road project will soon be floated.

The project, which aims to construct a tunnel connecting Minister KJ George's constituency to the Kempegowda International Airport, is an integral part of a 114-kilometer elevated corridor planned to improve commuting in the city.

Detailing the project's progress, Shivakumar revealed that following a meeting with cabinet and police officials earlier in the day, the first phase will focus on the construction of a single tunnel, with careful consideration given to the placement of entry and exit points. He emphasized that the road should not encroach upon the Vidhana Soudha to protect the city's heritage and ensure security in the core areas.

The Deputy CM also provided timelines for other urban initiatives. He confirmed that the Greater Bengaluru Authority will commence operations by September 15, and a meeting has already been held to determine the number of civic corporations that will fall under the umbrella of the new governing body. Shivakumar expressed determination to resolve urban challenges in Bengaluru, including waterlogging and encroachments, with the necessary budget and administrative backing.

In response to immediate civic concerns, Shivakumar stated that water tankers will be deployed to flood-affected areas, and households where rainwater has entered will receive emergency relief of ₹10,000.

Regarding street vendor regulation, the Deputy CM announced that all registered vendors will be allowed to operate only in designated areas, reinforcing the need for vendors to register promptly. Abandoned vehicles on roads will be relocated to a single yard, with unclaimed vehicles to be auctioned after 21 days.

The Deputy CM also highlighted advancements in digitizing city governance, with plans to integrate all 25 lakh properties in Bengaluru into the e-Khata system and address violations by telecom companies in terms of optical fibre cable placement. Road widening projects will proceed, with affected landowners to be compensated through Transfer of Development Rights (TDR).

On a cultural note, Shivakumar unveiled plans for a grand Cauvery Aarti, scheduled to take place within 100 days, with the event receiving a budget allocation of ₹90 crore. The Aarti will be held weekly on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays with participation from religious mutts across Karnataka, and a devotional song celebrating unity will be composed for the occasion.
