Invest in Public Transit: The Smart Money Move!
Investment in Public Transport Yields Triple Return - Investment in Local Transport Yields Triple Returns, Reveals Study
Ever wondered if shelling out those Euros for public transport (PT) is worth it? A study by DB's "Future of Public Transport" initiative suggests it most certainly is! The annual cost of operating PT amounts to a whopping 25 billion euros, but the value it generates? A staggering 75 billion euros!
This economic boom isn't just limited to the PT sector – it trickles down to related industries like vehicle manufacturing and cleaning services. But it's retail that really benefits, with a large chunk of their turnover being directly dependent on passengers. Tourism, especially in cities and tourist regions, enjoys a significant boost as well, thanks to accessible PT options. And let's not forget the benefit to employees, who can now easily commute to work -- all thanks to buses and trains!
According to Schilling, this should be another compelling reason for the federal and state governments to augment the existing PT offerings even further. Every euro invested in PT reportedly yields a threefold return today.
The Future Cluster MCube, led by TU Munich, conducted this study for DB. MCube CEO Oliver May-Beckmann explained that PT strengthens retail, tourism, the labor market, and alleviates the daily grind for commuters. But that's not all – it also saves societal costs, such as traffic accidents, land use, noise, air pollution, and CO2 emissions. Shifting the current PT traffic volume to motorized individual traffic (MIT) would incur an additional 9 billion euros in costs annually, calculated May-Beckmann.
So, investing in PT doesn't just improve your daily commute – it's a smart move for the economy, the environment, and your pockets!
