International Cooperation Initiative for the "SCO Arbitration Forum" has officially been introduced by CIETAC
The China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC) has taken a significant step forward in promoting international arbitration cooperation by launching the "SCO Arbitration Forum" International Cooperation Initiative. This regional effort, announced during the SCO Arbitration Forum in Urumqi, Xinjiang, on April 25, 2025, aims to foster legal cooperation on arbitration within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) region.
The Initiative aligns with the growing consensus on the need to build an international arbitration community, recognizing the practical need for resolving cross-border commercial and investment disputes. It emphasizes the importance of upholding independence, fairness, and efficiency in arbitration services, and encourages the use of alternative dispute resolution services to foster an arbitration-friendly judicial environment.
The Initiative proposes several key steps to achieve its goals. First, it seeks to facilitate mutual information exchange about training programs, seminars, and competitions related to arbitration and mediation. This will help in sharing best practices and fostering a harmonious arbitration ecosystem.
Second, the Initiative promotes the use of Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) platforms for cross-border B2B disputes. By improving accessibility and efficiency, these platforms can help in resolving international commercial conflicts more effectively.
Third, the Initiative encourages the signing of cooperation agreements among arbitration bodies across SCO countries. This will support knowledge sharing, harmonization of arbitration practices, and joint development of legal expertise.
The Initiative also supports efforts toward gender equality and diverse representation in arbitration processes, recognizing the importance of inclusivity in dispute resolution. Furthermore, it organizes and participates in regional arbitration conferences to discuss challenges and modern trends in international arbitration.
These steps collectively aim to create a more integrated and effective arbitration environment in the SCO region by leveraging cooperation, training, and technological innovation to resolve disputes amicably and efficiently.
The "SCO Arbitration Forum" International Cooperation Initiative received extensive support from 29 international arbitration institutions across 24 of the 26 SCO relevant states. This support underscores the importance of the Initiative and the shared commitment to strengthening legal cooperation on arbitration within the SCO framework.
By enhancing international collaboration and promoting integrated development, the Initiative not only serves as a crucial driver of regional prosperity and development, but also contributes to the rule of law in global governance. It is a defining trend for the times, and a significant step towards jointly writing a new chapter for the development of international arbitration and fostering an open, inclusive, and interconnected international arbitration ecosystem.
