In a significant turn of events, Intel has officially abandoned its plans for a mega-factory in Magdeburg, Germany. The groundbreaking ceremony, originally scheduled for 2024, never took place as the project was put on hold in fall 2023 and has now been terminated.

The decision comes in response to weak market demand for semiconductors and Intel's restructuring effort aimed at financial discipline. Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan confirmed that no construction will proceed, and future capacity expansions will depend solely on customer demand.

The project, initially promising about 3,000 new jobs and an estimated €30 billion investment, will not materialize in this location. Intel is now shifting focus to existing sites and will be more cautious with capital allocation moving forward, indicating that the Magdeburg land will remain undeveloped unless new plans emerge.

As of July 2025, no credible sources indicate any alternative plans or developments for the land. The city of Magdeburg will, therefore, not receive the anticipated 3,000 new jobs as a result of Intel's withdrawal from the mega-factory project.
