Intel announces job cuts for employees amid CEO's pursuit of long-term profitability
In an effort to streamline operations and boost competitiveness, Intel's new CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, has unveiled a comprehensive plan to reduce bureaucracy and increase operational efficiency. The strategy includes a significant workforce reduction, organizational streamlining, and a focus on engineering excellence.
The workforce reduction, amounting to approximately 21,000 employees or 20% of Intel's global workforce, will be achieved through a combination of layoffs and attrition, with the process starting in Q2 and being implemented as quickly as possible over the next several months.
Tan aims to remove organizational complexity within Intel by reducing management layers by about 50%, creating a leaner structure with fewer redundancies. This move is expected to increase accountability at every level and ensure that every investment "makes economic sense."
In addition, Intel is canceling or slowing major new factory projects in Germany, Poland, and Ohio, and relocating some manufacturing from Costa Rica to Asia. These decisions are aimed at aligning spending more closely with market demand and operational focus in more cost-effective regions.
The company also plans to implement a return-to-office policy, requiring employees to attend the office four days a week by September 1st. This policy is designed to foster collaboration and decision-making, with Intel's facilities becoming "vibrant hubs of collaboration" under Tan's leadership.
Tan's office attendance policy stops short of a full return-to-office mandate, but still encourages a greater physical presence to enhance collaboration. He also plans to reduce the number of meetings and meeting attendees within the company to improve efficiency.
Tan's approach emphasizes "building what customers need, when they need it," with execution consistency and cost discipline serving as pillars of the turnaround. The goal is to help Intel get back on a path to gaining market share and driving sustainable growth.
