Integrated ChatGPT Voice Assistant Now Available in Volkswagen Vehicles via IDA Technology
Volkswagen of America, Inc., is set to launch its ChatGPT-integrated voice assistant, Plus Speech, starting September 6, 2024. This innovative feature is designed to transform the driving experience, making it a truly hands-free journey.
The IDA voice assistant, powered by Cerence Chat Pro, extends beyond standard automotive functions. It can handle complex, conversational questions, suggesting restaurants, road trip destinations, or even creating stories. This assistant is not just a tool; it's your personal travel companion.
Starting next week, current owners of compatible MY24 ID.4 vehicles with an active Plus Speech subscription will automatically have the ChatGPT functionality activated. For owners of other compatible models such as the Jetta, Jetta GLI, and Taos, the option to purchase a Plus Speech with AI subscription will be available through the myVW mobile app.
In 2025, the voice assistant will be available in the 2025 Jetta, Jetta GLI, and MY24 ID.4 vehicles equipped with an 82-kWh battery. MY25 ID.4 vehicles, including those equipped with the 62-kWh battery, will be ChatGPT ready later this year. The GTI, Golf R, and Tiguan will also benefit from this feature, with 1 year included with vehicle purchase.
The ID.4 and ID. Buzz come with 3 years of Plus Speech with AI included at no additional cost. The Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models will include ChatGPT in 2026.
Privacy and security are paramount in the IDA voice assistant. All session contextual data is deleted immediately to ensure maximum data protection. ChatGPT does not access vehicle data in the IDA voice assistant. The assistant can be activated by saying "Hello IDA" or "Hello Volkswagen" or by pressing the steering wheel's button.
The voice assistant seamlessly connects to the cloud when local system can't fulfill a request for processing through Cerence Chat Pro. This connection to the cloud, combined with the multitude of sources, including ChatGPT, ensures accurate and relevant responses to nearly every query imaginable.
In a partnership with Microsoft, the integration of ChatGPT into the Plus Speech voice assistant marks a significant step forward in automotive technology. With this integration, Volkswagen is redefining the driving experience, making it more interactive, personalised, and convenient.
