In North Rhine-Westphalia, approximately 70 percent of Germany's inland waterway traffic between the Rhine estuary and inland ports is handled. The responsible authorities for monitoring working and rest time regulations during this period include the Waterways and Shipping Offices (Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsämter), such as the Waterways and Shipping Office Elbe-North Sea. These authorities support compliance with working time regulations and oversee labor conditions within their jurisdiction.
The inland waterway network in Germany spans approximately 6,650 kilometers, making it a vital part of the country's transportation infrastructure.
