"Tough Decisions" Economist Proposes Linking Pensions to Inflation

Inflation-tied pension adjustments to spur economic growth

The economic sphere isn't taking it easy on us, especially when it comes to securing long-term pension stability. Veronika Grimm, a renowned economist, is advocating for some bold moves. As the new federal government sidesteps solutions in the coalition agreement, Grimm voiced her concerns over the endless debates surrounding temporary fixes, in an interview on Deutschlandfunk.

In the coalition agreement, Union and SPD agreed to establish a pension commission to offer suggestions for reforms.

Politics - A Long-term Game: Grimm's Bold Ideas In her opinion, a gradual increment in the retirement age, mirroring the increase in life expectancy, is urgent. Adjusting the retirement age by about a year every ten years would balance the ratio of pensioners to employed persons, Grimm suggested. As it stands, the statutory retirement age is 67 years.

Grimm is also in favor of abolishing the pension at 63, but under the condition that an individual can work up to the normal retirement age due to health reasons. Furthermore, she proposed that existing pensions should increase with the price level, not just wages.

"These decisions may not be palatable, but they set us on the right path for a stable future," Grimm asserted.

Discourse - The Pension Gap and Civil Servants Grimm isn't impressed with Federal Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Barbara Bas' debate about boosting revenue by integrating civil servants into the statutory pension insurance, which could lead to inflated costs. For her proposal to make a significant impact, performance claims for civil servants would need to be reconsidered.

Rather than this, Grimm advocates for open discussions regarding which professions ought to remain civil service-oriented. However, she exempts those positions closely tied to state loyalty, such as law enforcement and judicial system employees, from such discussions.

In light of the ongoing economic debates, economist Veronika Grimm suggests a link between pensions and inflation, proposing that existing pensions should increase with the price level, not just wages, as part of her comprehensive pension policy. Additionally, Grimm has proposed gradual increments in the retirement age and the abolishment of the pension at 63, subject to health conditions, in a bid to secure long-term pension stability in the business sector, a move that she believes is necessary given the increasing life expectancy.
