India's New Navi Mumbai Airport Inaugurated by PM Modi, Boosting Asia's Aviation Hub Ambitions
Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has been inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking a significant addition to India's aviation infrastructure. The airport, built at a cost of around Rs. 19,650 crores ($2.37 billion), is Mumbai's second international airport and aims to establish the region as a major connectivity hub in Asia.
The airport's construction has been a long-awaited project, with its origins tracing back to 1997. After facing several delays, it was finally inaugurated on October 10, 2025. NMIA is expected to handle a substantial amount of traffic, with an annual passenger capacity of 90 million and a cargo capacity of 3.25 million metric tons once fully operational.
NMIA features several sustainable practices, including dedicated storage for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), solar power generation, and EV bus services. It will also be the first airport in India to be connected by water taxi, further enhancing its eco-friendly credentials. The airport has four passenger terminals and will work in tandem with Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport (BOM) to alleviate demand.
Prime Minister Modi's vision for NMIA extends beyond just passenger traffic. He expects the new airport to connect local farmers to international markets and boost nearby industries, contributing to the region's economic growth.
The inauguration of Navi Mumbai International Airport is a testament to India's commitment to expanding and modernizing its aviation infrastructure. With its sustainable practices and ambitious plans, NMIA is set to become a significant player in Asia's aviation landscape, providing much-needed relief to Mumbai's overburdened airport and boosting the region's economy.
