India's Green Building Council Aims for Net Zero by 2050, GIFT City Achieves Platinum Rating

The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) has been instrumental in promoting sustainable construction practices. In April 2021, it launched the IGBC Mission on Net Zero, aiming to facilitate net zero carbon emission status for India by 2050. Meanwhile, over 6,780 projects have adopted IGBC green standards, with an aspiration to reach 10 billion sq ft by 2022. This year, over 190 leaders from various countries will gather in Glasgow for COP26 to discuss and finalize climate action.

GIFT City, India's first Greenfield Smart City, achieved the IGBC Green Cities Platinum rating in September 2021. This demonstrates the progress made in integrating sustainability into urban planning. India has also increased its installed power generation capacity from renewable sources to 38.5%, nearing its target of 40% by 2030. Green buildings, which are resource-efficient in design, construction, and maintenance, play a significant role in this transition.

In 2021, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) developed the 'IGBC Green Logistics Parks and Warehouses Rating System' to address social, environmental, and economic sustainability. The goal of COP26 is to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius, with an ultimate target of 1.5 degrees Celsius. India has reduced its emission intensity by 28% over 2005 levels, working towards its target of 33-35% by 2030. CII's commitment to sustainability began in 2004 with the establishment of the Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre, aiming to transform India into a global leader in green businesses by 2022.

The IGBC Mission on Net Zero, along with other initiatives like the Green Logistics Parks and Warehouses Rating System, demonstrates India's commitment to sustainability. With COP26 focusing on climate action, India's progress in renewable energy and green building adoption is a significant step towards its climate goals.
