India Launches Rs 4,000 Crore Deep Ocean Mission in Green Budget

The Indian government has launched a Rs 4,000 crore Deep Ocean Mission over five years to study marine biodiversity and climate change. This initiative is part of the Union Budget 2021-22, which aims to put India on a green recovery path post the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Budget has a long-term vision for environmental sustainability this decade. The 'Health and Wellness' pillar integrates air pollution management, waste control, and potable water supply with a five-year plan. The Urban Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 receives a significant allocation of Rs 1,41,678 crores for waste management and reducing single-use plastic.

To promote renewable energy, the Budget plans an investment of Rs 2,500 crores for solar and other clean energy sources. Additionally, a national hydrogen mission is launched to generate hydrogen from green power sources. The Budget prioritises 42 urban centres with a million-plus population for air pollution control, with a budget of Rs 2,217 crores. Furthermore, an investment of Rs 50,000 crores over five years is proposed for research in health and technology innovation.

The Indian government's Union Budget 2021-22 demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental sustainability and green recovery. With significant investments in ocean exploration, waste management, renewable energy, and health innovation, the Budget sets a clear path for India's environmental future.
