In-N-Out Burger's Relocation from California Explained

In-N-Out Burger Announces Expansion to Tennessee

In-N-Out Burger, the beloved West Coast fast-food chain, has announced plans to expand its operations by opening a new Eastern Territory office in Franklin, Tennessee. The move is set to take place next year, with the office opening in 2026 and the first Tennessee location expected to open at the end of 2025.

CEO Lynsi Snyder, the granddaughter of the company's founders, revealed the news in a recent podcast appearance. Snyder cited better opportunities for raising a family and doing business as the reasons for the move. Despite the relocation, Snyder emphasized that California remains home to the corporate headquarters and many existing locations, with the Tennessee expansion aimed at facilitating business growth and offering employees better living opportunities.

The expansion plans include as many as 35 new Tennessee locations over the coming years, marking a significant push into the southern U.S. market. However, the East Coast states are not currently part of the company's expansion plans.

The move to Tennessee was influenced by issues during the pandemic, including California rules requiring vaccinated customers and mask-wearing for employees in restaurants. Snyder, who did not regret being shut down for a brief moment during the enforcement of vaccination rules, stated that the company will manage operations from the Nashville suburbs.

In-N-Out Burger will have a warehouse in Tennessee, but it will not process its own meat there. Instead, the company will continue to deliver from its beef facility in Texas. This move allows the company to expand into states that can be reached from its Texas facility, suggesting potential expansion into Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee.

Despite the move, In-N-Out Burger does not anticipate a major East Coast push. The company's office in Irvine, California, will close by 2030, but the company will maintain its presence in California, where it operates 281 of its 418 locations. The company's offices in Baldwin Park, California, will continue to manage operations.

Florida has reportedly begged for In-N-Out Burger to open, but the company is still saying no. The company has not disclosed any plans for further expansion beyond the states mentioned.
