Trade Union Aims to Save Steel Mill and Mercedes Plant - IG Metall Fights to Save ArcelorMittal Steel Mill in Eisenhüttenstadt
IG Metall union is fighting to keep the ArcelorMittal steel mill in Eisenhüttenstadt open. The union plans to negotiate with Mercedes-Benz to secure the plant's future beyond 2030, while also resisting the mill's closure through protests and potential strikes.
ArcelorMittal Europe had initially abandoned plans to convert the Bremen and Eisenhüttenstadt steel mills to climate-neutral production. IG Metall, however, is determined to save the Eisenhüttenstadt mill. Jan Otto, the regional head of the union, believes the final decision on the mill's fate has not been made. The union is optimistic about the future of the Mercedes plant in Ludwigsfelde, which produces the Sprinter van and employs around 2,700 people. Mercedes-Benz has also set up a pilot plant for electric vans in Ludwigsfelde, which the union sees as a positive sign for the plant's continuation.
The union's strategy involves organizing protests and demanding no reduction in shifts at the Eisenhüttenstadt mill. It is even considering an indefinite autonomous strike to force ArcelorMittal to revoke its shutdown plans. This move is part of a broader fight to save jobs and oppose restructuring that threatens thousands of positions in the industry.
IG Metall is actively working to secure the future of both the ArcelorMittal steel mill in Eisenhüttenstadt and the Mercedes plant in Ludwigsfelde. While the fate of the Eisenhüttenstadt mill remains uncertain, the union's optimism about the Ludwigsfelde plant suggests a potential path forward for the industry's workforce.
