Hybrid vehicles produced by BYD demonstrate a 10% decrease in fuel consumption, enabling an upgrade via software for already-sold models to enjoy this improvement.

BYD's Fifth-Generation DM Hybrid Technology Boosts Fuel Efficiency

BYD, a leading automotive company with ticker symbols HKG: 1211 and OTCMKTS: BYDDY, has made a significant leap in fuel efficiency with its fifth-generation DM hybrid technology. The National Motor Vehicle Quality Inspection and Testing Center (Guangdong) has certified this improvement.

The new DM 5.0 technology, officially launched on May 28, 2024, has reduced fuel consumption to just 2.6 liters per 100 km under NEDC test conditions when the battery is depleted. This represents a 10% improvement from the previous 2.9 liters per 100 km benchmark introduced in May 2024.

Key features enabling this improvement include a high engine thermal efficiency of 46.06%, a smart, intelligent control system, a powerful electric motor and advanced battery pack, extensive data-driven software and hardware coordination, integration with e-platform 3.0 and CTB battery body integration technology, and a redesigned petrol engine that functions as a generator to recharge the battery during driving.

This holistic approach combines a high-efficiency combustion engine, intelligent hybrid mode switching, advanced battery and motor technology, and continuous optimization with big data and software upgrades. The result is industry-leading fuel economy and driving range.

The first models equipped with the fifth-generation DM technology were the BYD Qin L DM-i and Seal 06 DM-i, launched on May 28, 2023. Both vehicles boast a combined range of up to 2,100 kilometers, about three times that of traditional fuel vehicles.

In July 2024, BYD sold 344,296 New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), a 0.56% increase year-on-year but a 10.01% decrease from June. The sales data shows a mixed picture for BYD, with strong BEV sales but declining PHEV sales. Specifically, the sales of BYD's PHEV models decreased by 22.61% year-on-year and 4.45% from June, with 163,143 units sold in July.

Despite a 14.02% decline from June, BYD's passenger BEV sales remained strong, with 177,887 units sold in July, a 36.84% increase year-on-year. This marks the fourth consecutive month of year-on-year decline in BYD's passenger PHEV sales, with the decline widening from 12.45% in June.

The sales data, released on August 1, 2024, does not include sales of traditional fuel vehicles. The fuel efficiency optimization will be provided to all BYD vehicles equipped with the fifth-generation DM technology through over-the-air (OTA) upgrades.
