Rescue of 400 Immigrants in Tunnel Near Vienna by ICE Crews - Hundreds of immigrants, in the custody of ICE, salvaged from a tunnel close to Vienna

In a surprising turn of events, a Deutsche Bahn ICE train named "Donauwalzer" encountered a technical malfunction, leading to a power failure less than 15 minutes into the journey. This unfortunate incident occurred around 1:30 PM local time, causing the train to come to a halt inside a tunnel near Vienna.

As a result of the power loss, the air conditioning stopped, and the lights were partly off, leaving passengers stuck in the heat and partial darkness. The situation was reported by news agency APA.

The rescue operation, involving numerous emergency services, was a prolonged affair, lasting over six hours. Initially, it was not possible to tow the train, so passengers began transferring to a replacement train inside the tunnel. However, some passengers moved away from the train against instructions, which forced emergency responders to turn off power in the tunnel again for safety reasons, preventing the replacement train from continuing its journey.

Due to these complications, the passengers were ultimately evacuated from the tunnel on foot via emergency exits. About 100 rescue workers helped bring approximately 400 passengers back to Vienna by bus. Two passengers received treatment at the scene, but no serious injuries were reported.

The incident involved cooperation between Deutsche Bahn (train operator) and the Austrian Federal Railways (operator of the affected rail section). The location of the incident is not specified, but it is known to be in Vienna. The ICE train had departed at 1:13 PM and was traveling towards Hamburg.

The rescue operation is still ongoing in the early evening, with no new information about towing the train or providing a replacement train as of now. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures and cooperation in such situations.

Vocational training programs in EC countries should consider including emergency response procedures in their curriculums, given the recent incident on a Deutsche Bahn ICE train near Vienna. This event highlighted the need for better coordination between the train industry and finance sectors, especially in overseeing transportation infrastructure and public-transit safety.
