High-speed Corvettes from General Motors set new speed records at the iconic race track in the United States

In a groundbreaking achievement, General Motors' (GM) Corvette line has broken American speed records at the Nürburgring racetrack in Germany. The record-setting Corvettes, including the Z06, ZR1, and the hybridized all-wheel-drive ZR1X, achieved impressive lap times on the 12.9-mile Nordschleife circuit.

The Corvette ZR1X, equipped with a 1,250-horsepower 5.5-liter twin-turbo-charged V8 engine, set a new American record with a lap time of 6 minutes 49.275 seconds. This hybridized model, paired with lightweight carbon fiber wheels and Michelin summer tires for extra track grip, showcases GM's commitment to advanced technology and performance.

The 'standard' ZR1, with a twin-turbo 5.5-litre V8 producing 1,064 bhp and rear-wheel drive, also recorded an impressive official lap time of 6 minutes 50.763 seconds. Both cars were equipped with the ZTK performance package, tailored for track use, to optimize performance on the challenging Nürburgring circuit.

The Corvette Z06, driven by vehicle performance manager Aaron Link, achieved a lap time of 7:11.826. This model, equipped with a 670-horsepower 5.5-liter V8 engine and advanced carbon-ceramic brakes, demonstrated its prowess on the track.

Notably, these lap times were achieved by non-professional drivers, including engineers who developed the vehicles. Brian Wallace, another engineer, clocked 6:50.763 in the ZR1, while Drew Cattell, who holds the fastest Nürburgring lap time ever recorded by a non-professional driver, achieved a time of 6:49.275 in the electrified, all-wheel-drive ZR1X.

GM President Mark Reuss stated that no other auto manufacturer has attempted something like this at the Nürburgring. This achievement underscores GM's dedication to pushing the boundaries of automotive performance and innovation.

In another significant development, GM is investing $888 million into building a new V-8 engine in New York. This investment underscores GM's commitment to American manufacturing and its continued focus on performance vehicles.

All the Corvettes used in these record-breaking laps were U.S. production-spec vehicles, with only safety equipment recommended by the track as modifications. The Corvette Z06, with its Z07 Performance Package, was paired with high-performance Michelin racing tires, while the ZR1 was paired with super-light carbon fiber wheels and high-grip Michelin summer tires. The ZR1X also featured high-performance carbon-ceramic brakes with 10 pistons in the front and 6 in the back.

These record-breaking achievements at the "Green Hell" racetrack are a testament to GM's dedication to performance, innovation, and engineering excellence. The Corvettes, with their powerful engines, advanced hybrid all-wheel drive, track-focused packages, and expert vehicle engineering, have truly raised the bar for American performance vehicles.
